Employers

For employers, the Driving Eyesight Toolkit clearly sets out the employer’s responsibility for drivers under health and safety regulations. It explains the higher risk of collision for those who drive for work purposes and suggests considerations for eyecare policies.

Employees

For employees, the toolkit provides advice on the small steps they can take to improve their driving vision. It advises on regular eye examinations and the wider benefits of eyecare. The DVLA regulations on eyesight requirements are clearly set out so that employees are fully aware of the standards they must meet.

Factual evidence

Statistics are given in the Driving Eyesight Toolkit, showing the extent of the problem of poor driver vision. Research results are set out, revealing drivers’ attitudes to eyecare and how often they visit the optician. Real life case studies are also used to bring home the reality of the potentially devastating outcome of driving with poor vision.

Suzanne Randall, corporate account manager for Specsavers Corporate Eyecare, said: ‘We feel extremely strongly about the issue of poor driver eyesight. It is a problem that can cause shattering results but can be so easily and cost-effectively overcome. By introducing the Driving Eyesight Toolkit, we hope to assist employers and employees alike in making sure the roads become a safer place for us all.’
