Honey Pot Day Nurseries pupils are
buzzing about learning to ride a bike with Balanceability

With the Olympics around the corner, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) children at South Liverpool’s Honey Pot Day Nurseries are simply buzzing about the chance to take a Balanceability course, which will get them bike ready, using balance bikes.

A team of staff from four of the seven Honey Pot’s sites have been specially trained by Balanceability, the UK’s only afPE-approved learn-to-cycle programme to deliver the course to the children aged between 3 and 5 years. In a series of fun activities, the sessions will develop pupils’ motor skills, spatial awareness, dynamic and static balance and teach them how to pick up, manoeuvre, mount and dismount their bikes safely.

An increase in parental time pressures means that some children are not learning valuable life skills, and according to British Cycling, 33% of parents say their children can’t ride a bike. That’s why, Honey Pot Day Nurseries Quality Manager, Kim Wilson was determined to offer the chance to learn to ride a bike to as many children as possible.

Balanceability offers a sustainable programme for nurseries and schools to promote the physical benefits of cycling for children as young as 2½ years old, as well as providing a fun and engaging activity. Education settings can purchase a Balanceability Pack which includes all the equipment, resources and training required to deliver the sessions as a sustainable programme and can be run by teachers indoors or outdoors. The programme offers children the ability to become competent cyclists at an early age through the development of balance and control, with 94% of children aged 4 to years 6 years old able to safely ride a pedal bike at the end of the programme.
